Haiku Composed in an empty classroom, where my Japanese Literature class was supposed to be held, after being told that the professor for the course, Andrew Markus, had been found dead in his apartment. 孤独部屋 In this lonely room
Composed sitting on the roof of a friends Komagome apartment at around three in the morning. The night was perfectly still, and the only sounds that could be heard were those of the flying crows' wings. 江戸の夜 Edo at Night
Composed when hiking on Mt. Ranier. As we walked nearby on a snow-covered path, a small pine tree, bent completely over by the weight of the Winter frost, broke the surface of the snow. It did so incrementally and with what seemed like considerable effort. The sun shone hotly down on us, and I was struck by how much the young tree must have wanted to free itself and join us, standing in its warm rays. (Eventually we snapped out of our reverie and gave it a hand...) 長期間 For a long spell
Composed while reflecting on my imminent move to Japan。 菊花つぼみ Chysanthemum buds
Composed while laying on my bed, staring out the windows on a rainy Seattle Sunday. 雨が降り Rain is falling
