On Her Leaving, This Fine Morning

Soft rays of dawning light
Into my room this morning came
And heavy shadows o'er her fine face
Withdrew to crouch in distant corners

Oh her face, t'was the first thing
To fall across my eyes this day
It stirred in me a longing
So fierce I could nigh resist

In her eyes I could see
She had long since awakened
And from my own slumber was I
With her silent gaze drawn forth

I drew her close, held her tight
In my arms felt her body shake
As early morning light shone
In her eyes, so gentle and warm

The fusuma slid with a whisper
And from the genkan a soft click
My love, she walks into the day
Drawing a breath of crisp dawn air

And there in my own bed I lay
Sweet perfume lingering still
Listening to her footsteps recede
And pulling the blankets tight
